Description: This opinion article, co-authored by me and published in Estadão’s Blog do Fausto Macedo, reflects on the murder of João Alberto Freitas and argues that anti-Black violence in Brazil is inseparable from structural racism and exclusionary models of citizenship. Drawing on official data, legal analysis, and contemporary events, we examine how racial inequalities in policing, healthcare, employment, and consumer spaces reinforce systemic discrimination. The article contends that citizenship cannot be fully realised while Black Brazilians continue to face unequal access to rights, public services, and social participation, calling for structural rather than merely symbolic responses to racial injustice.
